Reports & Proposals

What is the Swedish Shipowners Association proposal?

The Swedish Shipowners Association is committed to promote environmentally friendly shipping. A credit-based NOx and SOx trading scheme is proposed in order to tackle environmental problems such as acidification, eutrophication and ground level ozone.

SOx and NOx reductions achieved within the borders of EU 25 shall be traded through a Central Registry System. Among participants are the installations covered in the IPPC Directive, financial institutions, and all ships plying in EU waters. Participating installations will comply with EU regulation with shipping operating under IMO regulations (voluntary participation). The aim is to achieve requested reductions and the NEC targets with the least overall costs and give further incentives for clean technologies. Marketable credits will be monitored and verified with credits being traded or banked throughout the calendar year.

The proposal can be found in full on-line http://www.sweship.se/Files/PDFDokument/060515_Final_SSAProposal.pdf.
